GWM UK is a new UK charity set up to support the Bible ministry work of GWM, in Malawi. GWM’s objective is ‘to bring more in-depth teaching of the Bible to the villages and urban townships of Malawi’. It responds to the concern that much Christianity in Malawi has minimal impact on private morals and public integrity. With many rural pastors having little, if any, Bible training, the situation is not improving.
At the invitation of a Christian traditional chief, founder Patrick Chimbali started preaching in the village of Chiole near the central Malawi town of Ntcheu in December 2013.

Joined by his friend and colleague Hastings Kadaya in 2014, they focused on consistent evangelism and follow-up discipleship. Within 5-6 years, a group of up to 100 people was meeting regularly for instruction. Around 20 of these attended an 18-month Bible course offered with assistance from Johannesburg Bible College.

Some of these better trained individuals have been instrumental in starting Bible teaching works in nearby villages, and also in Hastings’ own hometown of Mulanje in eastern Malawi.
Although GWM is a legally constituted NGO in Malawi, it is not self-sustaining financially. Initially, support came from Christians in South Africa where both Patrick and Hastings had studied. So in April 2023, GWM UK was established with the aim of promoting and raising funds for GWM in Malawi.
At the end of last year, GWM UK’s Chairman, Andrew Marsay, visited Malawi to attend the local Board meeting and GWM’s 10th anniversary on 29 November.
This was a very special day of thanksgiving, great preaching of God’s Word, and much singing, dancing and fellowship! High points included:
the public recognition of the new Malawian Chairman, Abel Sautiphiri.
a presentation to the current local chief, Blessings Nyasuru, in recognition of the role of her mother, Chief Emmie Matonga, at whose invitation the work began.

What’s next for GWM?
In February 2024 GWM Malawi will be holding intensive training seminars at the Chiole base, for further training of our own leaders and some of the rural pastors seeking to improve their ability to preach the Bible.
Later in the year, two similar events are to be held in the Mulanje base, where there is a great hunger for better Bible teaching among the many untaught rural pastors.
Looking ahead to 2025, we have plans to create a more permanent Bible training institute in Mulanje to meet the ongoing, and long-term need to training Bible teachers.
